SMA Website Update

September 30, 2014 – It is nice when things work out. I previously updated my N2LRB website to ExpressionEngine 2.9. But I was in a bit of a dilemma with the 2.2.2 version of the Saint Michael Academy website because I not only had to update the ExpressionEngine version but I also had to update the User add on from Solspace. I inquired online and found out that updating the website to EE 2.9 would break my current User version.

User is my membership add on, which cost my $100 back in 2011. The default member database that comes with EE (ExpressionEngine) is terrible when it comes to having people fill out a form for later approval by the web admin. In order to fill out the form, people would need limited access to the control panel. And that’s a no no. Which is why Solspace was able to create and make money from User.

I thought I was looking at spending $85.00 for the current version of User. But I logged into Solspace using my user account and saw that I was allowed to download the current version of User at no cost to me!!! I was  happy camper. The next question was how to upgrade to EE 2.9. I liked how Updater from Dev Demon quickly updated my N2LRB website and I also learned how to do it via that experience. So I purchased another Dev DemonUpdater licensed, uploaded it and use it to update to EE 2.9.

After updating to EE 2.9 I tested the User pages and nothing worked. I was getting page errors. I uploaded the new version of User by deleting the old version folders and after installing it via the Control Panel, I was relieved to see the Saint Michael Academy alumi come back up. The User update was a success!

Now I consider updating my EE 1.6.9  websites up to 2.9. I just don’t know if it will cost my anything either in terms of money or loss functionality (going to Core?).  I have to post that very question up on the ExpressionEngine Website. But so far so good.
